Zille Distillery Bar
The Zille Distillery bar and eatery was named after the famous illustrator and photographer, Heinrich Zille.
Here you can enjoy the classic Berlin peppermint liqueur drink Berliner Luft (4cl), which is served along with an entertaining anecdote from Master Zille himself.
Non-alcoholic drinks are also available on request.
The “Mit Zille in der Destille” Programme (German)
is an evening of irreverent and frivolous traditional Berlin cultural entertainment, including food, which takes place at the Zille Distillery bar in the historic Nikolaiviertel.
A visit to the Zille Distillery bar offers a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the life and times of the famous Berlin artist Heinrich Zille. Zille would have drawn some of his inspiration from places like our bar where everyday folk come together to socialise. Our very own Father Zille will entertain you with stories and songs about Zille’s life and his contemporaries who would have socialised in bars known as Bouillonkeller, which in former times were frequented by gangs and criminals, bygone Berlin pubs, which were called Budiken, distilleries and taverns. You will also learn a thing or two about Zille’s encounters with women who in Berlin are referred to as “de Mächens” and also much more. The repartee is as cheeky, frivolous, titillating and bawdy as it used to be back in former days. You will be amazed by the many interesting facts about bygone Berlin and the life of this beloved artist. Zille’s regular drinking place (Stammtisch) has been completely brought to life.
Zille impersonator Albrecht Hoffmann will take you on an entertaining musical journey back in time where you will you get a fantastic insight into his “Milljöh”, which in Berlin slang means “milieu” and is also the name that Zille gave to a series of illustrations he made of the Berlin proletariat. According to Zille’s great grandson, Hein Jörg Preetz-Zille,
“Hoffmann does not just play Zille, he completely immerses himself in the role!” The Zille programme is incorporated into your evening at the bar and Zille can always be found milling among the customers.
He usually socialises with his guests at their tables or at the bar.
The Zille Distillery bar is a small traditional bar, which is reminiscent of the traditional Berlin tavern culture. Berlin specialities such as Molle und Korn (beer and schnapps) and original Zille Weisse (Zille wheat beer) are served accompanied of course by the local Berlin dialect, known as the Berliner Schnauze.
